Making Wonton Noodle Soup at home is easier than you think! This is a warm, comforting soup that's so wonderful for chilly days.
On a cold, chilly day, there's just something amazing and magical about a hot, comforting bowl of soup. It's like a warm hug from the inside.
Chinese food is also comfort food for me. As a kid, my family would often celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other special occasions at our favorite Chinese restaurant. And wonton noodle soup was always – always – a part of those celebrations.
Even now, when my husband, kids, and I crave comfort food, we often turn to Chinese food take-out. Or, we make some of our own versions of our fave Chinese food dishes at home.
Have you ever tried to make wonton soup at home? It's surprisingly easier than you might think!
What is wonton soup?
Wontons are dumplings often filled with meat and/or seafood. They can be fried, steamed, or included in soup.
Wonton noodle soup is a staple in Chinese restaurants. It's a soup that is often served as a precursor to the meal, but is an absolutely satisfying main dish as well. The soup is broth-based, with filled wontons. You might sometimes find additional flavor components, such as water chestnuts, green onions, additional pieces of shrimp outside of the wontons, and/or veggies like bok choy and mushrooms.
Homemade wontons or store-bought wontons?
There are two ways you can make this soup:
- with homemade wontons, or
- with store-bought wontons.
Honestly, both homemade wontons and store-bought wontons work in this recipe! If you have time, go for the homemade wontons. I actually find a bit of zen when making them from scratch.
If you're short on time, go for the store-bought version.
