To say that I am a little excited about writing this post is an understatement. Whole Foods Market is about to open another store in the Portland-metro area, and it’s so close to home for me. I got a sneak peek at the store last week and think all of you locals will love it!
The Whole Foods Market Greenway store is located on Scholls Ferry Road, about a mile west of HWY 217. It will open at 8:30am this Wednesday, May 21, 2014, with an official bread breaking ceremony, with Tigard Mayor Cook and Beaverton City Councilor Betty Bode.

There are so many great grand opening specials to tell you about, but first: let me take you on a tour of the newest addition to the Whole Foods Market family.
Commitment to community
As soon as you walk up to the Greenway location, you are immediately made aware of this Whole Food Market’s connections to the local community.
In the photo above, you see men installing the artwork that was created by students from neighboring Mary Woodward Elementary School. In addition to partnering with the school for this permanent art installation, Whole Foods Market is giving the school a $2,000 Whole Kids Foundation School Garden Grant.
The local producer loan program by Whole Foods Market features food producers from in and around the community, and local farms and food artisans are showcased with prominent signage throughout the entire store.
Whole Foods Market is also donating more than $1,000 worth of non-perishable food items to the local Good Neighbor Center.
Your neighborhood store
Whole Foods Market is truly about creating a gathering place for each local community. At Greenway, they’ve paid homage to our area by naming the on-site pizzeria with large authentic pizza hearth as the “Fanno Creek Pizzeria.”
The deli, where you can pick up a large assortment of freshly prepared items including salads, vegetarian and meat entrees, sandwiches, side dishes, and more is called “Cafe Conestoga.” Meanwhile, the hot bar which will feature rotating ethnic and seasonal fare is dubbed “Monte Toro” (which translates to Bull Mountain — my ‘hood!).
There is also the Whole Foods Market signature bakery with cakes, cupcakes, cookies, breads, and so much more. The bakery shelves were not yet filled at the time of my tour, or you can bet I would have taken numerous food porn photos of those delicious baked goods!
The Whole Foods Market Greenway store continues the company’s commitment to high quality food and beverages and sustainability, featuring local produce, meats, seafood, beer, wine, and other items from local vendors.
Beer & Wine
Whole Foods Market Greenway features over 350 linear feet of beer, including an exclusive offering of the local Bridgeport Hillsboro Hopps IPA.
There is also a draft beer and growler station, where you can fill your growler and also choose from eight local beers and two wines on tap.
And, I am guessing you’ve seen the many artistic chalk drawings throughout various Whole Foods Markets, right? Did you know they are all hand-drawn by local artists? So cool!
The wine selection here is impressive. Have I told you about my favorite $10 Argentinian wine at Whole Foods? You can read about it here, just don’t go emptying store shelves of it until I get there, okay?
Since many of you are wine lovers like me, I thought I’d share a shot of the Songbird wines that are reportedly going to be on special during opening week. I’ve heard good things about this one and can’t wait to try it.
. . . and the cheese section leads you directly to the charcuterie station.
We got to sample some of Whole Foods Markets’ fabulous Parmigiano Reggiano (remember when I got to see them crack 85-pound Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheels?) along with the Whole Foods Market exclusive Gusto salame line. Gusto salame products are all gluten free, treenut and peanut free, and free of nitrates, milk-product, egg and soy. They are absolutely DELICIOUS.
Whole Foods Market’s commitment to quality meats is evident, and you can find their rating system clearly displayed. You can also ask the meat department to prepare any piece of meat into any specific cut you would like. It’s like your own personal butcher shop!
Greenway Store Exclusives
One of the things I loved discovering about Whole Foods Market is that they encourage their team members to come up with new store features that would benefit that local community. How cool is that? I had no idea! I want to work here! If I didn’t have four other jobs, that is ;)
My favorite feature of the Whole Foods Market Greenway store is not only something exclusive to this location, but also something that came out of the innovative minds of Whole Foods team members: the Grind-Your-Own Nut Butter Station. I love this!
You can choose from many different types of nuts, but my favorite is the chocolate hazelnut (because: chocolate + hazelnut = magical BLISS, my friends!).
Seafood & fish fry program
Being an Oregonian, I am a true seafood lover through and through, and if you’re like me, you’re going to love the Greenway location’s seafood offerings, which are delivered fresh six days a week. During our sneak peek tour, we got to sample this fresh and buttery salmon that is smoked in-store. Oh my word. It’s like buttah. So good.
Also exclusive to the Greenway location is a fish fry program. Choose your fish and the Whole Foods Market staff will fry it up for you. Fresh fish and chips? Yes, please!
Have fire pit, will gather
The Greenway location is also the only current location to include a fire pit in its outdoor space. The design is modern and well-planned, with enough seating inside and out for about 80 people.
The modern design aesthetic of Whole Foods Markets just get me. I am madly in love with these light fixtures that hang above the indoor cafe seating area.
In addition to its food and beverages, Whole Foods Market Greenway features a Whole Body section of wellness, skin, hair, and body care items that continue to uphold the company’s commitment to quality and nature. No products sold here are tested on animals. The Premium Care Whole Body products meet the strictest standard for quality sourcing, environmental impact, results and safety when it comes to personal care items.
Commitment to Sustainability
Store construction includes locally sourced reclaimed wood from the Port of Portland, and the cafe seating area was built using recycled building materials from the site. I also just happen to love the signage throughout the store: well-designed, and easy to follow.
Grand Opening Specials
The first 100 visitors to the store on Wednesday, May 21 will receive a Whole Foods Market gift card. Gift cards will range from $10 to $100, and will be handed out in random order.
Grand opening festivities will also include:
- a two-day, 25% off sale on all 365 Everyday Value® items (stock up now! I know I will! ;)
- a Copper River Salmon cut-and-wrap truckload sale from 11 am to 5 pm
live music from the Southridge High School Jazz ensemble paired with local wine tasting.
I’m really excited about the new Whole Foods Market Greenway location. They have done a great job transforming the site into a nice neighborhood gathering space, and I look forward to shopping here many times in the future. In the meantime, see you here at 8:30am Wednesday May 21st for the grand opening!
