One of the last things you ever want to deal with is a medical emergency while traveling abroad.
And certainly not during your very first trip to Europe, not to mention your very first time staying with the boyfriend’s parents.
So of course, that’s what happened to me. Of course.
While in my early twenties, fresh out of college, I traveled to Europe for the first time with my then boyfriend/now husband. During my first couple of days there, my tooth was feeling a little funny. And by funny, I mean not so funny: it hurt. One morning I woke up in so much pain, swollen, and just a mess. Luckily, we were staying with my in-laws in Switzerland, and they took me to their family dentist.
Their dentist who spoke no English. And I, the patient in an insane amount of pain, spoke no Swiss German.
Commence the fun.
I ended up having an emergency root canal that trip. Thank goodness for my now mother-in-law, who was so helpful, patient, and kept things light while translating between me and the dentist.
The year was 1997, hairstyles were questionable, and travel insurance was the last thing on my mind.
This is a photo of me in Geneva, Switzerland, a few days after aforementioned emergency root canal.
I survived the rest of the trip with little pain, and eventually the humiliation of having a medical emergency in front of my now in-laws subsided. I was very, very lucky that they were there, had a family dentist they knew and trusted, and could help me understand and take care of the paperwork.
Most of the time, that’s not how medical emergencies while traveling work. Most of the time, you aren’t sure where to go, who to trust, and how much you’ll have to shell out to be taken care of.
As someone who travels a decent amount throughout the year, I was intrigued by the idea of travel insurance, and recently learned about Protect Your Bubble.
