It’s a new day. I’m embarking on a journey that, after a year of having a W-2 job, takes me back full circle to re-focusing on my life passions, my business babies…and my babies who are at the heart of every decision I make.
The most common question I have answered in the last month is: “So where are you going next?”
To be honest, I haven’t known how to answer that confidently until now. My answer, metaphorically and literally, is this: I am going home.
I am home, again.
Every mother makes hard choices that work specifically for her and her family. I know the only way I can personally balance the work that I love with the family and friends that I love and the many hobbies that feed my soul is to work for myself. Not because working for oneself equals 50/50 balance (HA!), but because I know I can be a total machine when it comes to working on something I am passionate about, and if I am going to work 40, 50, 60, or even 70 hours in a week, I’m going to do so on my terms and only knowing that it will absolutely pay off in spades both professionally and for my family.
Solopreneurship is a crazy life, but it’s the best life I know how to live.
Why go back now? Summer is almost here. In two weeks my kids will be out of school, and with my daughter starting kindergarten in the fall, the sappy mom in me feels this emotional need to make the most of this summer together. We have swim lessons, and maybe gymnastics or dance, but more than that (because I am very much against over-scheduling children), we have long summer days that are empty pages waiting to be filled with our own adventures. There is so much I want to show, teach, and experience with my children this summer. Even though I will be working, this is something I know I can do, and do well: scheduling work around spending quality time with my kiddos.
What’s in store for Urban Bliss Media? This is the question I will be working all summer to answer definitively. I know some answers now; the others will become clearer through various exercises I have in store. I am super excited to continue working with my current clients and taking work with some clients to a more involved level, but there will definitely be a slight shift of focus, and perhaps even a soft re-launch of sorts come this fall. I’m ready to try and to fail and to get back up and to fail and fail again until I get it right. That’s the entrepreneur credo, isn’t it?
What’s in store for Urban Bliss Life? A whole lot. I intend to post at least three times a week, participate in more blog hops, do more guest posting, introduce regular features, re-work and re-work the blog until it feels right, and then re-work it more. Even though I initially announced 2012 would be the Year of No Conferences for me, I plan to attend both the Wine Bloggers Conference and the International Food Bloggers Conference in August, since they are both in Portland this year.
What’s in store for me? Plan to see me around & hear from me a lot more. When you work for someone else in today’s 24/7 social media-driven world, you take on the responsibility of representing their brand; when you work for yourself, you are the brand. It feels good to be living out loud again, in full open authenticity, using my own voice. I’m working on booking more speaking engagements, guest posts, regular contributions to relevant publications, radio & tv shows, and most definitely participating in more networking events than I have recently.
Why should you care? Maybe you shouldn’t, but you’ve read this far, haven’t you? I’d love to have you share in this journey with me, and I’d love to get to know you more. Please leave a comment, or e-mail me and let’s chat!
* Do you need a business coach who will help you drill down your goals, evaluate your strengths/weaknesses, help you develop a solid action plan and then stand by your side to cheer you on and also hold you accountable for follow-through?
* Do you need a high energy professional guest speaker, panelist, emcee, or moderator for your event?
* Are you looking for a seasoned PR pro specifically with keen insight into the mom consumer demographic and experience with social media campaigns?
* Are you a food/wine/design/home/mom/entrepreneurial blogger looking to connect, guest post, or are interested in having me do a guest post on your blog?
I’m really looking forward to making many new connections in the coming months, and re-connecting with those who share similar work/life passions. So definitely drop me a line if you have time!
Final note: this past weekend was the first in a long time that allowed me to be 100% focused on my family. Friday I spent baking cookies and cupcakes for my son’s birthday party, then Saturday we went to the Madagascar 3 screening courtesy of DOLE Bananas (thanks guys!), then hosted the LOUDEST birthday party ever for my son. Sunday I took my daughter to a birthday party, then we had lunch with my husband’s godmother, who was visiting Vancouver BC from Switzerland and decided to make the drive down to see us (how awesome is that?). We played. We took care of things around the house. We went grocery shopping. We sang songs and laughed and ate meals together.
My family is the single most important thing in my whole life…and I look forward to working on my life passions again without sacrificing my quality of life.
It’s good to be home again.
PS: MOB=Mom-Owned Business. On Mondays, I share personal stories, tips, tactics, resources, and inspiration for mom entrepreneurs.
PPS: Just in case there is ever any question, let me be absolutely crystal clear: I have the greatest respect for my former employer, and I wish continued success to all of my amazing friends still working there. To every experience, there is a beginning and an end, and it was merely the right time for me to move on.
